With technology advancing at a rapid rate, humans are being replaced by machines in many industries and sectors the world over. Millions have already lost their job to a machine and global unemployment is at an all time high. Many believe that automated banking devices may eventually replace all human tellers, but not everyone agrees this is the case. Although companies such as ATM Canada Inc. are now putting machines in locations where ten years ago they wouldn’t have had access, human tellers don’t appear to be in danger of being phased out in the near future.

Some companies are now making use of ATM cyborgs. These machines come with a screen that shows the head of a bank teller in a remote location. He or she may be seen with the help of a web cam and the teller performs activities traditionally handled by human tellers. This includes such tasks as cashing checks. Banks are choosing to go this route to save money that they would have otherwise spent on staffing a branch. The main advantage of using an ATM cyborg is it allows the customer to interact with a human rather than a computer as many prefer this option. In addition, these machines can’t be physically threatened by someone as a human teller may be and the tellers are available 24 hours a day in certain locations, making banking easier for all.

ATMs aren’t expected to replace human tellers anytime in the near future though. Not only do some customers still prefer the human touch as they believe it offers superior customer service, but some aren’t comfortable with using the computer interface on ATMs. A teller can answer questions an ATM cannot and bank representatives are trained to offer solutions to customers when it comes to their banking needs.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, bank tellers work in a growing field. In 2008, their report stated that there were 600,600 tellers in the country and this number was expected to grow to 638,000 by 2018. Although the number of ATMs is growing at an astounding rate, the number of bank tellers has yet to decline. There are many reasons for this, such as those cited above. At this time, it does not appear that bank tellers have anything to worry about. Their job does appear to be safe as there are still many functions that only a human can handle and customers who refuse to work with machines, no matter how technologically advanced they are.
